The 1960s

At 9:34 in the morning on 5 May 1961 a Redstone left Cape Canaveral with Alan Shepard inside a Mercury capsule. Fifteen minutes and twenty-two seconds later it was in the Atlantic. The National Air and Space Museum gives 116 miles of altitude. He was the first American in space.

Shepard was a Navy test pilot and a NASA astronaut, which is why neither mark is on this shirt. The collection is the duration and the date.
