At 9:34 in the morning on 5 May 1961 a Redstone left Cape Canaveral with Alan Shepard inside a Mercury capsule. Fifteen minutes and twenty-two seconds later it was in the Atlantic. The National Air and Space Museum gives 116 miles of altitude, 302 miles downrange, and 5,180 miles an hour. He was the first American in space. Shepard was a Navy test pilot and a NASA astronaut, which is why neither mark is on this shirt. The chest is the duration and the date. Heavyweight tee, forty-two dollars.
