The first powered flight lasted twelve seconds. On 17 December 1903, Orville Wright left a wooden rail on the flat sand at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and covered about 120 feet before the machine settled again. Three more flights followed that morning; Wilbur’s fourth reached 852 feet. The town of Kill Devil Hills did not exist yet, and the flights were not in the village of Kitty Hawk. The chest is the duration. Heavyweight tee, forty-two dollars.
