The Story & Historical Record

On 6 March 1990, Lt. Col. Ed Yeilding and Lt. Col. Joseph Vida flew SR-71A serial 61-7972 from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 20 seconds, averaging 2,124 miles per hour (3,418 km/h), as the Blackbird ended its career with the US Air Force. That same airplane now sits at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.A small top-down silhouette of the SR-71A Blackbird sits at the chest, with one thin vertical line of type trailing behind it like a contrail: LOS ANGELES TO D.C., 6 MAR 1990.Garment-dyed heavyweight 100% ring-spun cotton, relaxed unisex fit, made to order and shipped from the US. Printed in white on a black tee, small and quiet, so the story is the thing people ask about.Sources Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird SR-71A silhouette traced from the USAF SR-71A 3-view (Wikimedia Commons, public domain).
