The Story & Historical Record

On 1 August 1943 the Army Air Forces flew Operation Tidalwave, a low-level B-24 raid on the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania, after an unescorted flight of about 1,000 miles from Libya. Of 178 bombers and 1,726 men, 54 aircraft and nearly 500 men did not return. Five airmen earned the Medal of Honor: Addison Baker, John Jerstad, Lloyd Hughes, Leon Johnson and John Kane. The refineries were back in production quickly, and Ploesti was not attacked again until April 1944.
