The Story & Historical Record

On 19 June 1944, in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Navy fighters from Task Force 58 met four waves of Japanese carrier aircraft west of the Marianas. The Grumman F6F Hellcat did most of the work. Lt. (jg) Alexander Vraciu of VF-16, flying from USS Lexington, shot down six Yokosuka D4Y dive bombers in eight minutes using 360 rounds, and a shipmate said it was just like an old-time turkey shoot. Over 19 and 20 June the Navy lost 123 aircraft and destroyed nearly 600. The chest is an F6F-3 Hellcat from a Navy photograph taken over Patuxent River in February 1944, printed as a two-ink halftone.Heavyweight tee, from thirty-four dollars.Garment-dyed heavyweight 100% ring-spun cotton, relaxed unisex fit, made to order and shipped from the US.
