The record / 1900s
On 13 February 1943, Marine Fighting Squadron 124 flew the first Corsair combat mission from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, escorting Navy PB4Y-1 Liberators on a bombing run against Bougainville. The Navy had rejected the F4U for carrier use after it failed deck-landing trials, so the Marines took it to the Solomons as a land-based fighter. Its inverted gull wing was drawn around the biggest engine available, and by the end of the war the Corsair had an 11 to 1 kill-to-loss ratio over Japanese aircraft.
